From Times Wire Reports

A state police officer confessed to the execution-style murder of a street youth in 1993, an unanticipated development on the first day of a trial seen as a test of Brazilian justice. “I fired, and I fired again,” Rio de Janeiro state trooper Marcus Vinicius Emanuel said at the trial of four men accused of murdering eight street children. “I never saw who I shot,” added the 29-year-old officer, who for three years had denied involvement in the killings. Emanuel’s lawyer immediately asked for a recess. Two other state policemen and a metalworker will face trial in the case next month, and four other officers arrested this month could go on trial later.
