Council to Consider Beach Path Speed Limit
- Share via
Anticipating the usual summertime beach crowds, police say they want to limit speed on the bicycle and pedestrian path near the municipal pier, an action that officers say would reduce the number of accidents and help them enforce city codes.
The City Council on Monday will consider an emergency measure that would limit wheeled traffic, including cyclists, in-line skaters, skateboarders and even walkers, to 2.5 mph in the pier area when it is crowded.
People would be notified by signs and flashing yellow lights when congested conditions exist, putting the speed limit in effect.
According to a staff report, the revision would greatly assist the Police Department and reduce the likelihood of collisions between pedestrians and wheeled traffic.
Current city code has no reference to speeds on the pathway, according to the report.
The council meets at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 2000 Main St.
