From Times Wire Reports

President Liamine Zeroual promised to hold new legislative elections next year but did not say whether the country’s outlawed Islamic opposition will be allowed to participate. The announcement came after an assassination and a bombing similar to previous attacks claimed by militants seeking to overthrow the secular government and establish an Islamic state. A former interior minister, Mohammed Hardi, was assassinated in an Algiers suburb Saturday, and two people were killed and 14 wounded later in the day when a bomb exploded at a bus stop in Tizi Ouzou, a city outside the capital. There were no immediate claims of responsibility.
