Manufacturer to Seek OK on New Building

Share

A manufacturing company hoping to relocate from Chatsworth to Simi Valley will bring plans for an 81,197-square-foot headquarters building to Simi Valley’s Planning Commission on Wednesday.

Standard Abrasives Inc. wants to build an office and manufacturing facility on Guardian Street to replace its current headquarters, damaged during the Northridge earthquake. If the city approves Standard’s plans, the company, which makes such products as sandpaper and sanding disks, would transfer its 120 employees to the Simi Valley building.

As designed, the project also would include a loading dock, 38,229 square feet of warehouse space and a 183-stall parking lot.

Although the project’s 7.4 acres are zoned as a business park, a neighborhood lies just to the north, across the Arroyo Simi. To reduce noise, the loading dock has been located on the building’s western end, away from nearby houses. A 13-foot-wide landscape planter, separating the property from the arroyo, is designed to block neighbors’ views of the building.

City planners are recommending that commissioners approve the project.
