From Times Wire Reports

Several hundred merchants clashed with riot police in downtown Mexico City after police and government officials moved in to stop the sale of what they called contraband foreign goods. Reports on the number of people hurt ranged from 22 to 70. The merchants sold mainly clothes, shoes and electrical goods. “They destroyed a lot of our merchandise in the operation,” one merchant said. Other vendors complained of being beaten by police who were backing up government inspectors.
