From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The FBI borrowed breathing equipment from the local fire department to search an underground area near Unabomber suspect Theodore J. Kaczynski’s remote cabin, an official said. George Grotz, a spokesman for the FBI’s task force in San Francisco, confirmed a report that the agency searched an underground area near Kaczynski’s cabin a few days after his arrest on April 3. He said the FBI borrowed breathing apparatus from the Lincoln Fire Department to carry out the search. But Grotz denied that the area is a “tunnel system.” He said the underground area is a “root cellar,” a hole that was used to store firewood. Grotz declined to comment on the results of the search.
