Hearing on Landfill Access Moved to June
A Superior Court hearing to decide whether the only access road into Sunshine Canyon Landfill can be used by garbage trucks to haul trash into the dump will take place June 4 in downtown Los Angeles.
The date had initially been set for May 30, but was changed due to attorney conflicts.
Sunshine Canyon Landfill, owned by Browning Ferris Industries, is situated above Granada Hills and straddles the line between the city of Los Angeles and unincorporated county territory.
BFI is attempting to reopen the county portion on July 1.
On June 4, a Superior Court judge will hear a lawsuit filed by the North Valley Coalition against BFI and the city of Los Angeles over an agreement the waste company and the city reached in December to reopen the dump.
Earlier this week, Superior Court Judge Robert O’Brien denied the North Valley Coalition’s request that BFI be prohibited from using the road because, in part, the street was improperly zoned. O’Brien did rule, however, that garbage trucks may not travel on the road until after the June 4 hearing on the coalition’s lawsuit.
