Henry Clarke; Fashion Photographer for Vogue

Henry Clarke, 77, fashion photographer for Vogue magazine for several decades. Born in Los Angeles, Clarke grew up in San Francisco, where he worked as a window dresser for I. Magnin. In 1946, he went to New York and became an assistant in Vogue’s studio, observing famed photographer Cecil Beaton. Clarke was at his peak in the 1950s and ‘60s, working in France under contract to American, French and British editions of Vogue. His work took him to India, Mexico, Italy, Iran, Jordan and Syria, where he shot fashion features that often were spread over 20 pages of the magazine. Among his subjects, besides fashion models, were the Duchess of Windsor, the Empress of Thailand and Robin Duke. On April 26 in Le Cannet, France, of leukemia.
