World IN BRIEF : BANGLADESH : 200 Killed, 5,000 Hurt in Severe Storm
A severe storm battered part of northern Bangladesh, killing nearly 200 people, local officials said. They said as many as 5,000 people were injured as the storm, with heavy rains and winds up to 93 mph, tore through the district of Tangail and part of neighboring Jamalpur. More than 2,000 injured people were taken to one rural hospital in Tangail, doctors said. “But we had the capacity to admit only 35 patients,” one doctor said. Witnesses said they had seen many injured still in their homes crying out for help.
