City Council to Solicit Bids for New Towing Garage Contracts

Share

After years of heated debate, the Los Angeles City Council voted Wednesday to send new contracts out for bid to run official police towing garages throughout the city, with one member dissenting out of concern that the new system will not stop a handful of companies from monopolizing the business.

According to the council action, the city will let four new contracts each year. The contracts launched this year will last four years, the next round will extend for five. Garage operators will pay the city 7% of their income from police towing.

Reform of the system was spurred by concerns that the city’s 20 official police garages were controlled by just a few companies.
