DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

Faced with the daunting prospect of a proposed 2,138-home development on a nursery near its eastern border, Azusa’s city leaders are turning to a nonprofit agency designed to help local government be more effective.

The Local Government Commission began three days of workshops and meetings Thursday with City Council members, planning commissioners and city staff to discuss Lewis Homes’ Rosedale development project on 520 acres of the Monrovia Nursery.

“Azusa has never had to process a project of this size before, we could use an outside perspective on how to deal with a project like this,” said City Planner Dan Watrous. “We’re talking about adding 7,000 people to the population.”

The Friday night and Saturday sessions at the Azusa Senior Center, 740 N. Dalton Ave., will be designed for public participation, officials said. Among the speakers are former Pasadena Mayor Rick Cole, the commission’s Southern California director.
