Hollywood Park’s Kansas Unit Files Chapter 11: Hollywood Park Inc. said its Sunflower Racing Inc. subsidiary in Kansas City, Kan., filed for protection from creditors under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. Inglewood-based Hollywood Park had already taken an $11.3-million write-off in the quarter ended March 31 of its investment in Sunflower, which operates the money-losing Woodlands racetrack. Hollywood Park Chairman R.D. Hubbard owned a 60% stake in the Woodlands when Hollywood Park purchased the track in 1994 for $20 million in cash plus the assumption of $50 million in debt. The hope--never realized--was that the Kansas legislature would approve casino-style gaming for the facility.
