Amgen, the Thousand Oaks biotechnology giant, has awarded four-year college scholarships to two National Merit Scholar candidates whose parents work at the company.

Michelle Hsiang, a senior at Agoura Hills High School, and Grace Ma, a senior at Thousand Oaks High School, were awarded the scholarships, which help cover tuition costs at the university of the students’ choice.

Hsiang plans to attend Stanford University, and Ma plans to go to UC Berkeley this fall. Both students plan to pursue careers in science.

“One of Amgen’s foremost corporate commitments is the education of students in our community,” Gordon Binder, Amgen chairman and chief executive officer, said in a press release. “We hope that by supporting today’s outstanding students, we not only encourage their continued achievement but motivate tomorrow’s student to strive for academic success.”

The Amgen Foundation Scholarship Program was established last year in cooperation with the National Merit Scholarship Corp. Children of Amgen employees in the United States mainland and Puerto Rico who are National Merit Scholar candidates are eligible to apply.
