Paul S. Veneklasen; Expert on Acoustics, Environmental Noise

Paul S. Veneklasen, 80, acoustical physicist who pioneered studies in environmental noise and solutions to industrial noise problems. A native of Grand Haven, Mich., he earned degrees in mathematics and physics at Northwestern University and UCLA. After working as a researcher at Duke and Harvard universities, the scientist established the research firm Paul S. Veneklasen and Associates in Santa Monica in 1947. Veneklasen designed acoustical interiors for performing arts facilities across the country. He also was a consultant to various governmental agencies and private companies on correcting environmental and industrial noise problems. He held patents on several inventions to enhance and protect hearing, including a sound shield for telephone transmitters, earphone sockets, shielded condenser microphones and a cable system for microphones. He was director of the Western Electro-Acoustic Laboratory and the Paul S. Veneklasen Research Foundation. On Tuesday in Pacific Palisades.
