Bradley Nowell, lead singer for the Long Beach-based rock trio Sublime, was found dead in his San Francisco motel room during the weekend, apparently of a drug overdose. He was 28.

Nowell’s body was found Saturday after a night of partying, said Jon Phillips, the group’s manager.

The San Francisco County coroner’s office said Monday that the exact cause of death won’t be known for four to six weeks when test results are available.

Asked whether Nowell had died of a heroin overdose, Phillips said it was “probably the most distinct possibility.”

The band, which gained extensive airplay with its single “Date Rape,” was about to begin a summer tour in the United States and Europe to promote an upcoming album.

Nowell, of Long Beach, leaves a wife, Troy Dendekker, and an infant son.

The band was formed in 1988. Its albums included “40 Oz. to Freedom” and “Robbin’ the Hood.”
