Chamber to Sponsor Work Safety Seminar

Local business owners can learn how to write workplace safety plans required by state law at a workshop Thursday sponsored by the Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Such safety plans spell out how businesses handle workplace hazards and prevent or respond to injuries on the job. Depending on the business, the plans can cover everything from repetitive stress injuries caused by typing to broken bones suffered during an earthquake, said Jay Bayles, a local chiropractor and chairman of the workshop.

Although the state’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health requires all businesses to write such plans, Bayles said, many business owners are not aware of the requirement.

“Especially the smaller mom-and-pop shops--they don’t know about it,” Bayles said. “Or they know about it and let it slide.”

A representative of Cal/OSHA will attend the workshop to answer questions about the state’s requirements.

The workshop is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the chamber’s office, at 625 W. Hillcrest Road in Thousand Oaks.

Admission is $20 for chamber members and $30 for nonmembers.
