Hearing Scheduled on Water Rate Hike
Customers of Capistrano Valley Water District may soon have to pay a little more for their service. The district’s directors will seek public comment next Tuesday on a proposal to raise water rates by 3.4%. The hearing is part of the board’s review of its budget for the 1996-97 fiscal year.
If the water rate increase is approved, the average residential water bill would increase by $1 a month to $30.75, district officials said.
The rise would be the first in two years.
Officials said they are considering a rate increase because the cost of water purchased from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California has gone up.
The MWD raised its rates by 7% this year, following a rate increase last year.
“We didn’t have a rate increase last year when the MWD rates went up a bit,” general manager Ray Auerbach said. “So it’s a combination of both years, and we can’t afford to continue to absorb those increases.”
The Capistrano district serves about 30,000 customers in San Juan Capistrano and a small section of Dana Point.
