Riot police swinging truncheons moved into a crowd gathering to protest violations in Sunday’s elections. At least seven demonstrators in Tirana were injured, and their leaders were detained. President Sali Berisha’s ruling Democratic Party has claimed victory in the elections, but international monitors denounced the voting as rigged. The turmoil cast doubt on the future of democracy in Albania.
