State Senate Rejects Conroy Bill Requesting INS Officers at Jails
The state Senate rejected a resolution Thursday urging Congress and the president to station an immigration officer at each detention facility in California to make sure illegal immigrants who are arrested are deported.
The nonbinding resolution by Assemblyman Mickey Conroy, (R-Orange), was approved by a 49-13 vote in the Assembly in April.
But it failed on a 19-6 vote after Sen. Lucy Killea, (I-San Diego), labeled it an unrealistic “bit of feel-good fantasy,” which she said ignored both the practicality and cost of posting immigration officers at hundreds of local jails.
Sen. Richard Mountjoy, R-Monrovia, replied that the federal government might not enact the resolution exactly as proposed, “but it’s an idea they should be pursuing.”
The city of Anaheim is proposing to become the first city in California to permanently station an INS agent in its jail to identify and deport illegal immigrants who are arrested.
