Conference Will Help Parents Teach Kids

Three schools in the Hueneme School District that receive special federal assistance because of their large populations of needy students will host a conference today designed to teach parents how to help their children improve their education.

“We want to teach parents how to help their children at home,” said Bernie Lopez-Gonzalez of Charles Blackstock School, who is organizing the conference. “A child who has backing and support of parents is a much stronger student.”

Parents from Art Haycox, Ansgar Larsen and Charles Blackstock schools, three schools that receive Title I funds, are invited to participate in the conference. Schools that have a large percentage of needy students qualify for the federal funds. Each school decides how the money is spent. The conference will feature workshops in reading, math, science and technology. Teachers will demonstrate lessons that can be taught at home to help students attain academic success.

“Our goal is to have parents experience hands-on the kinds of challenges their kids face in the classroom,” Lopez-Gonzalez said.

The conference will be from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Charles Blackstock School, 701 Bard Road, in Oxnard.
