Rock-throwing Arabs clashed with Israeli troops Monday in the occupied West Bank town of Hebron.

Palestinian witnesses said Arab youths were angry after Israeli soldiers lined up a number of plainclothes Palestine Liberation Organization policemen against a wall and began searching their police vehicle.

The youths then attacked Israeli troops, who pursued them on foot, breaking into private clinics and kicking and punching doctors and patients, the witnesses said.

Residents also said soldiers Monday beat nine Palestinians, including Raed abu Omar, 24, and his brother Sharif, 18, who happened to be passing by, and detained them for two hours.

An Israeli army spokeswoman said she was checking the report.

Hebron, a flash point of Israeli-Arab violence, is home to more than 100,000 Palestinians and 400 Jewish settlers. Israeli Prime Minister-elect Benjamin Netanyahu has said in the past that he opposes Israel’s agreement to withdraw its troops from the city. But his plans as prime minister are not known.
