Hughes Gets Contract
FULLERTON — Hughes Aircraft Co.’s Naval and Maritime Systems unit in Fullerton has been awarded a $2 million contract for initial work on a U.S. Coast Guard vessel traffic control system.
The contract puts Hughes into competition with two other contractors, Lockheed Martin Corp. and Raytheon Co., for a second-stage contract next year that would call for construction of vessel control systems at as many as 16 major U.S. ports over a 10-year period.
The system would work much like an air traffic control system, enabling the Coast Guard to keep close track of vessels as they move in and out of major seaports.
The initial contract calls for Hughes to design and prepare a technical proposal for a system for the Port of New Orleans.
