Yahoo, Digital Equipment OK Licensing Pact

From Bloomberg Business News

Yahoo Inc. said Thursday that it licensed Digital Equipment Corp.’s AltaVista Internet searching software.

Under the agreement, Yahoo will use AltaVista as the underlying technology powering its Internet-directory search service. An Internet user punches in words, which AltaVista uses to search its indexes of more than 30 million World Wide Web pages.

Digital Equipment plans to license the software to other companies in an effort to build a brand name for its main market: corporations. Digital Equipment’s line of AltaVista products, announced last month, are targeted primarily at the so-called intranet--corporate computer networks created to use cheaper Internet software.
