New Eye Drug Colored by Side Effect: The Food and Drug Administration approved a new drug to help glaucoma patients fight blindness, but it has a strange side effect. It can turn hazel eyes brown. Because no one knows what causes that side effect or if the color change itself could hurt eyesight, the FDA said Pharmacia & Upjohn’s latanoprost should only be used by patients not helped by standard therapy. The restriction was imposed even though one study suggested it might work better than standard therapy. Latanoprost is the first of a new class of drugs that helps drain the fluid buildup that is the hallmark of glaucoma.
