Child-Resistant Packaging a Proven Lifesaver: Child-resistant packaging on prescription drugs has saved the lives of hundreds of small children since it was mandated in 1974, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The panel’s study, published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Assn., credits child-resistant packaging with a 45% decrease in the number of children dying each year from ingesting prescription drugs. Since 1974, about 460 lives have been saved among children ages 5 and younger, said researcher Gregory Rodgers of the CPSC’s Directorate of Economic Analysis.
