OLYMPIC REPORT 42 DAYS TO THE GAMES : Some Tickets Sent With Wrong Times

About 170,000 tickets to the Summer Olympics have the wrong starting time because of schedule changes made after they were printed.

Olympic organizers in Atlanta said they will send ticket buyers a notice of the changes, but will not give refunds or exchanges because of the problems.

Cycler Connie Paraskevin-Young made her fifth Olympic team by defeating Christine Witty in the women’s match sprint in a battle of two-sport stars at Trexlertown, Pa.

Paraskevin-Young, of Corona del Mar, made the Winter Olympic team in 1980 and 1984 as a speedskater, before going to the 1988 and 1992 games as a track cycler.

Blaine Wilson came from second place in the final event to capture the 1996 National Gymnastics Championship over defending champion John Roethlisberger at Knoxville, Tenn. John MacReady, Chainey Umphrey, Chris Waller, Stephen McCain and Scott Keswick of UCLA were among the 14 who advanced to the Olympic trials.

Cal State Fullerton’s Jack Jones was one of six players dropped Thursday from the squad competing for spots on the U.S. Olympic baseball team in Millington, Tenn.

Jones was one of three Fullerton players invited to the tryouts. Outfielder Mark Kotsay, the 1995 amateur player of the year, is certain to be selected for the team. Catcher Brian Loyd also is competing for one of the spots on the 25-man roster.

USC Catcher Chad Moeller also was released this week.

Fencer Peter Cox secured a spot on the Olympic team before the national championships after the U.S. Fencing Assn. ran all the point-total scenarios and determined that no one could catch him. . . . Middle blocker Elaina Oden of Irvine had 10 kills and outside hitter Tara Cross-Battle of Long Beach had eight to lead the U.S. women’s national volleyball team to a 15-8, 15-6, 15-5 victory over Germany in Koblenz.
