Ralston Quits College Board; Saenz Will Too

Veteran Trustee Shirley A. Ralston has resigned from the board of Rancho Santiago Community College District, and Trustee Tom Saenz plans to do the same in July, officials said this week.

Ralston, elected to the board in 1981 and reelected in 1985, 1989 and 1993, stepped down because her husband recently retired and the couple has moved to Kentucky, officials said. A successor will be elected in November to complete her term, which expires in 1997.

Saenz, principal of Prospect Elementary School in Orange, said he will retire next month and move to a farm in Michigan.

Saenz, who was elected in 1992, would have been up for reelection in November.

He said that he and Ralston, who many times cast the opposing votes on a number of 5-to-2 board decisions, are both active in the Republican Party and “represented the conservative view” among the college district’s trustees.

“I hope that the voters will keep that in mind and vote for a balanced board that will represent a diversity of opinions,” he said.

Besides the two positions being vacated by Ralston and Saenz, the posts held by Board President Enriqueta L. Ramos and Trustees Brian E. Conley and Michael Ortell also will be open in November.
