KENTUCKY : 3 Coal Executives Ordered to Prison

Three coal company executives were sentenced to prison for an explosion that killed 10 miners in 1989. All were accused of lying to inspectors and failing to follow safety procedures at the Pyro mine near Owensboro, Ky., where naturally occurring methane gas ignited after being allowed to accumulate to dangerous levels. Former general superintendent David Steele was sentenced to 18 months in prison and fined $3,000. A second executive was sentenced to six months, and the third, to five months.
