Obituaries : Victor M. Torres; Retired Carpenter

Victor M. Torres, a retired carpenter and active supporter of youth sports, died Monday. The Camarillo resident was 67.

Torres was born April 15, 1929, in Canoga Park. For 65 years, he called Ventura County home.

“Fishing and camping were two of his favorite things to do,” said Torres’ son, Ralph Torres of Irvine. In a statement, family members wrote: “Victor was always a pillar of strength and inspiration to his family and friends.”

Torres worked as a carpenter and business representative for the Ventura County carpenters union for 37 years.

He was active in Pleasant Valley Youth Baseball, Rio Mesa High School Booster Club and the Ventura VFW Post 1679.

Torres was a graduate of Santa Paula High School and Ventura College, and served in the U. S. Army.

In addition to his son, Torres is survived by his wife of 37 years, Helen Balades Torres; two other sons, Tommy Torres of Oxnard and Jeffrey Torres of Pasadena; three sisters, Anita Shearer of Las Vegas, Velia Torrez of Camarillo and Alicia Sabedra of Oxnard; a brother, Adolpho Torres of Los Angeles, and three grandchildren.

Torres was preceded in death by brothers George Torrez and Benito F. Torres.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Pierce Brothers Griffin Mortuary, Camarillo. A vigil will be held at 7:30 tonight at Griffin Mortuary.

The service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Magdalen Chapel, Camarillo.
