From Times Staff and Wire Reports

An incorrect flip of a switch in a jet carrying 106 passengers caused the loss in cabin pressure that left three crew members unconscious and sent the plane into a 20,000-foot dive, the airline said. The flight engineer responsible for last month’s mishap was fired, and the captain, who eventually regained control of the American Trans Air plane and landed in Indianapolis, was demoted. The jet was flying from Chicago to St. Petersburg, Fla., when the mishap occurred.
