Fingerprint ID System to Continue
Heeding the advice of Police Chief David S. Barr, the City Council has agreed to keep the city in a countywide fingerprint identification system.
The system, called Cal-ID, is used in identifying criminals. La Palma has been part of the countywide system since it started in 1987, but until 1995 no cost to cities was involved. Barr noted that until last year, special court fines enabled payment of the entire cost of the fingerprint identification system.
Fines no longer can pay the cost, Barr said. He added that cities now must pay a proportionate share of the system’s costs, based on population. He said La Palma’s cost for fiscal year 1996-97 will be $840.
“This method of assessing [city] users brings Orange County in line with the surrounding counties’ Cal-ID systems,” Barr said.
After hearing Barr’s report, the City Council unanimously approved the expenditure and authorized another year of city involvement in the system.
