A barge collision in the Mississippi River 30 miles south of New Orleans dumped an estimated 21,000 gallons of marine diesel fuel into the river Friday, the Coast Guard said.

The oil leaked from a 25-foot-long gash in a cargo tank carrying up to 84,000 gallons of the fuel, officials said.

The spilled fuel stretched about 20 miles, Coast Guard Cmdr. Ken Parris said. Containment areas have been set up downriver.
