Seeking funds for educational and recreational activities for the city’s youth, the Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley is kicking off an open house and membership drive Saturday.

“This is an opportunity to . . . let the community know we’re here,” program coordinator Tom Giambone said.

“We’re just trying to get more people involved and to help get kids off the streets.”

The event will also feature a carwash, rummage sale, potluck luncheon and a carnival with games, food and prizes.

Proceeds will help provide sports equipment, arts and crafts, a computer learning center and field trips.

“We need our children to have a safe place to go,” said Janice Palermo of the Capistrano Villas Youth Council.

“It’s a 100% improvement to playing in the streets. We just need a lot of support to keep this going.”

Membership in the Boys and Girls Club costs $5 a year per child.

Saturday’s event will be from 8 a.m to 5 p.m. at 31371 El Camino Real. Information: (714) 489-1389.
