NEW YORK : Parasite on Berries Sickens 71 People

Cyclospora, a parasite believed to be found on strawberries or raspberries has sickened 71 people in New York City, health officials said. A Department of Health spokesman said three people were hospitalized. Symptoms include diarrhea, cramps, fatigue, weight loss, gas, muscle aches and fever, nausea and vomiting. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta said the parasite could be transmitted by swallowing contaminated food or water.
