Gifted Kids’ Parents Seek Better Program

Share

A group of parents unhappy with the Newport-Mesa Unified School District program for gifted students said this week that they plan to start a new program at Harbor View Elementary School.

The Board of Trustees gave its support to the project Tuesday, agreeing that the district should look at ways to improve its existing Gifted and Talented Education program.

GATE meets twice weekly for a couple of hours in the afternoon, a schedule that some parents said was not enough to challenge gifted students.

The parents said they have chosen to model their program and curriculum after one in the Irvine Unified School District, which gives its advanced students the option of attending accelerated classes all day, every day.

The group hopes begin the program by the fall.
