Bond Measure Seeks to Update 911 System

Sounding an alarm that Long Beach’s 911 emergency dispatch system could fail if neglected much longer, the City Council placed a $30-million bond measure on the November ballot that would pay for new communications technology.
Long Beach police and fire officials have long complained that their radio equipment could fail during a disaster.
“If we have an earthquake, they’re both going to fail. That’s the bottom line,” Long Beach Fire Chief Harold Omel said.
Most of the bond would be paid by property owners, whose annual taxes would increase by $12.35 a year.
