The North Hollywood Division of the Los Angeles Police Department will host its final community open house and safety fair at the Tiara Street station today between 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

“The purpose of the open house is for the people in North Hollywood to meet the officers who work in the area and to view the station, probably for one of the last times because we’re getting a new station,” said Sgt. Chris Thiffault.

A new 37,340-square-foot station--a $15.2-million replacement for the current aging and cramped Tiara station--is scheduled to open in the 11000 block of Burbank Boulevard in November.

The relaxed atmosphere of an open house is designed to help officers and citizens get acquainted, he said. “A lot of times our job involves people on a negative basis or in a crisis; this offers a chance to talk in a positive setting, and we look forward to it.”

LAPD recruiters, bike patrol members, mounted officers, members of the SWAT team and a mobile trailer from the LAPD historical society will also be present at the event. Other participants will include representatives from the tagger task force, community police advisory board, Fire Department, Red Cross and Neighborhood Watch. Officials of the Missing Children Center will be available to fingerprint youngsters.

The safety fair will take place at the North Hollywood police station, 11480 Tiara St.
