OSNABRUECK, Germany — Suspected terrorists fired mortars at British army barracks on Friday, damaging several buildings but causing no injuries, firefighters and British army officials said.
Assailants shot three mortar shells from a vehicle parked near the gates of the barracks, Lt. Col. Jan-Dirk Merveldt said. The vehicle had British license plates, police said.
The attack was “presumably by a terrorist group,” the British military said. Authorities refused to elaborate.
The Osnabrueck barracks were the target of a 1989 bombing blamed on the Irish Republican Army.
In Friday’s attack, the shells exploded in the air before hitting their target, a gasoline pump, police said.
