Lasorda Can Have Job Back

Manager Tom Lasorda, kept in the hospital again Sunday and now expecting to be released today, said he has assurances from the Dodgers that he can return to his job when given medical clearance.

“I know where I stand with the Dodgers,” Lasorda said. “Fred [Claire, executive vice president] and [President] Peter [O’Malley] have each indicated to me that getting well is the most important thing, and I appreciate that. When I’m well, I’ll be back.

“They’ve tested me on everything, and there’s no other problems. There’s no cancer. No tumors. And the ulcer is just about under control.

“I feel great, except my legs are just weak from being in this bed for so long.”

The latest tragedy to hit the Dodgers occurred late Saturday night when outfielder Wayne Kirby was informed that his father died. Kirby took a flight Sunday to Norfolk, Va., and did not know when he’ll return. . . . Rocky Manager Don Baylor, so disgusted with starter Bryan Rekar’s performance in Saturday’s game, removed him from the rotation. He instead will start Roger Bailey on Thursday against the Dodgers. “That might be the sorriest effort I’ve ever seen,” Baylor said of Rekar, who yielded nine hits and seven earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. . . . Dodger infielder/outfielder Chad Fonville, who had six hits and two stolen bases the last two games, driving in his first runs since May 4, said that his confidence has returned. “It’s finally up again,” Fonville said. “It’s tough sitting back and not playing. I’m feeling good again.”
