Cox Unit to Purchase Equipment From Lucent

Cox California PCS Inc., a subsidiary of cable television giant Cox Communications Inc., said that it will buy about $500 million in personal communication services network equipment from Lucent Technologies.

Cox California, based in Irvine, plans to enter the wireless communications market by providing so-called personal communications devices that offer wireless communication, paging, electronic mail and Internet access. Lucent, based in New Jersey, makes telecommunications equipment and is one of three companies being created by the break-up of AT&T.;
