Sorry as I was to learn of the imminent demise of Unzer Wort, the world’s last daily Yiddish newspaper, I was even sorrier to see The Times refer to Yiddish as “the former language of East European Jewry” (June 26). Yiddish is not a “former” language. It is alive and well, still spoken by millions of people.
Here in Los Angeles, the Workmen’s Circle/Arbeter Ring and other Jewish institutions sponsor Yiddish language classes, discussion groups, choruses, lectures and publications.
