OLYMPIC REPORT 15 DAYS TO THE GAMES : Swimmer Appeal to Be Heard

Alternate Ron Karnaugh, bidding to have rival swimmer Greg Burgess dismissed from the U.S. Olympic team, will have his appeal heard in Atlanta on Friday, his manager, Bennett Raffer, said. The American Arbitration Association said that it will consider the appeal regarding the USOC’s decision not to penalize Burgess, the second Olympic qualifier who was arrested on a Jacksonville beach in late March and charged with public drinking and supplying beer to two underage members of the Colombian swimming team. He pleaded no contest and was fined $150. . . . Outside hitters Tara Cross-Battle and Bob Ctvrtlik, both from Long Beach, have been named captains of the U.S. Olympic volleyball teams. . . . Matt McKeon and Brian Maisonneuve scored second-half goals to lift the U.S. men’s soccer team to a 2-1 comeback victory over the Kansas City Wiz of Major League Soccer in Kansas City, Mo. The victory extended the U.S. team’s unbeaten streak to six games and winning streak to four game.
