Auburn Dam

On June 27, Congress demonstrated that you can protect the environment and the taxpayers at the same time. The controversial, environmentally destructive and financially bloated Auburn Dam project went down to defeat by a 35 to 28 vote before a packed hearing of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
Auburn Dam’s main proponent, Rep. John Doolittle (R-Rocklin), said, “We’ll have to wait for a calmer environment [for the dam to be approved].” I would like to tell him, as well as all of the local members of Congress that voted for the dam, that I hope the political environment in Congress never gets to a point where such destructive projects are greeted “calmly.” Members who voted against this boondoggle pork project deserve praise for sensing the increasing environmental consciousness of their constituents, and moving to protect the environment.
