From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Without fanfare, ceremony or 21-gun salute, New York City’s last warship, the Coast Guard cutter Dallas, left port for its new home in Charleston, S.C., a military spokesman said. Only a few relatives of servicemen were on hand to say farewell as a city fireboat gave the 378-foot cutter a water salute before it passed under the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in the harbor, a Coast Guard spokesman said. The move is part of a Coast Guard cost-reduction plan to close Governors Island, Petty Officer Don Wagner said. Robert Kramek, commandant of the Coast Guard, said it would save $30 million a year in operating expenses.
