U.S. Women Win 13th in a Row

Trisha Venturini and Kristine Lilly scored goals for the U.S. women’s team, which beat Australia, 2-1, in Pensacola, Fla., in its final tuneup for the Olympics.

Venturini scored in the third minute, heading in Mia Hamm’s corner kick on the United States’ first shot. Lilly made it 2-0 in the 49th minute, and Australia’s Katrina Boyd completed the scoring in the 88th minute.

The United States, 17-1-1 this year, takes a 13-game winning streak into its Olympic opener against Denmark on July 21.

The U.S. men’s team tied Nigeria, 0-0, in its final warmup match in Pomona, N.J., extending its unbeaten streak to seven games (5-0-2).

The U.S. team outshot the No. 1 team out of African Olympic qualifying, 11-7, held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks, and goalkeeper Kasey Keller did not have to make one save. It was Keller’s sixth shutout in nine games.

In other news, defender Jeff Agoos of Dallas and midfielder Jason Moore of Atlanta replaced Irvine’s Joe-Max Moore and midfielder Mike Fisher of Doylestown, Pa.

Moore is still recovering from a torn left groin muscle and Fisher left to pursue his education.
