Grads Need to Take a Look at the Big Picture

It is extremely frustrating to read a statement like “In today’s market, if you come out with a degree in computer science, you will have an easy time and can pick over several job choices” (“Why That Sheepskin Is Worth So Much,” Southern California Careers, June 24).

What does that mean? Does that mean that anybody with a degree in computer science can get a job right away, or does that statement basically refer to those people who aren’t too old and can relocate anywhere? More importantly, while computer science is the current hot field, how long is it going to stay that way before it becomes overcrowded with too many graduates?

A decade ago, nobody could possibly imagine a time when electrical engineers and nurses would be getting laid off, but that unlikely scenario has happened during the first half of the 1990s. Will there ever be a depressed market for computer science graduates? I’m sure there will be, considering how many prospective college students must now be picking it as a major.
