From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Researchers at the Columbia University School of Public Health announced they will begin a study of newly diagnosed breast cancer patients to try to determine whether pesticides, auto exhaust and other chemical irritants are responsible for Long Island’s high rates of breast cancer. The study will examine blood and urine samples donated by about 1,600 patients plus those of a control group of 1,600 healthy women. Researchers, who will recruit participants for one year beginning Aug. 1, also will collect dust, water and soil samples from the homes of 325 study volunteers. Long Island’s breast-cancer death rates have been among the nation’s highest.
