Planners Advance Sportsplex Proposal

Share

The Camarillo Planning Commission has voted unanimously to consider zoning changes that would allow a multiuse sports complex to be constructed on 75 acres south of the Ventura Freeway and west of Las Posas Road.

Commissioners voted 5 to 0 to allow developer Tim L. Wood to proceed with plans to build Sportsplex, an athletic training center and skating rink he said would attract athletes from all over Southern California.

The resolution approved late Tuesday does not constitute final approval for the project. Rather, it stipulates that the Planning Commission agrees to consider allowing the rezoning, which would be required on some sections of the property.

Wood wants to build a multiuse sports complex and retail center that would serve as a center for athletes in training.

It would include two skating rinks, an indoor arena, a skateboard park and other facilities. Wood said he hopes to break ground on the project next spring and open the complex in 1998.

So far, he has yet to make a formal application for the project. But he already has received conceptual approval from the City Council.
