Jury Convicts Man in Dog Owner’s Slaying

After deliberating less than a day, a Ventura County Superior Court jury found an Oxnard man guilty of murder Wednesday in the December shotgun slaying of another man who was walking his dog.

Jurors ruled that Joaquin “Jack” Ayala, 21, committed first-degree murder when he fatally shot Josue Salazar Carrera in the neck on Dec. 26 after a quick, nasty quarrel in front of Ayala’s house.

“He was held accountable for what he did,” Deputy Dist. Atty. Michael Frawley said after hearing the jury’s verdict.

“You couldn’t ask for more than that.”

Ayala’s attorney could not be reached for comment Wednesday. Ayala faces a sentence of 25 years to life for the murder, plus up to 10 years for use of a gun and causing great bodily harm, Frawley said.
