The school district has been awarded a $50,000 federal grant to begin a violence prevention program in conjunction with the Police Department and athletic organizations.

The program is aimed at reducing neighborhood violence by providing alternatives for children and teaching them how to resolve differences peacefully, said Tracy Painter, the district’s special projects coordinator.

“By teaching youths how to modify their behavior and providing them with positive activities, we have a much better chance for reducing violence in our community,” Painter said.

Conflict resolution training, led by Boys and Girls Club managers, police officers, school principals, guidance counselors and psychologists, will be offered for students and their families.
